What I'm wondering is what is a typical party you guys use when doing PvE stuff like storyline progression.  Right now I'm trying to get my Prophecies Nec through Nightfall and would like a general purpose party setup that would get me through the quests/missions.

I often have my Nec setup with Echo/SS and bring along an MM hero, warrior hero, and an Ele hero or Monk hero.  I then add a ranger hench, 1 or 2 healer henchies and the last spot varies a lot.

I also would like to know what builds I should use for my heroes --- again for an all-purpose type of setup.  I've been looking on the Wiki for builds to set my Heroes up with but I'm afraid they are often too complex for the AI to effectively use.

Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I don't have a Necro but this is what I have been going with...

With my monk (set as healing), I bring a hero MM, Searing flames Ele (supplemented with meteor or meteor shower), and a hero protect monk (usually with Restore condition elite).  I fill that in with two warrior henchies, usually an earth ele, and ranger.  Sometimes I switch out the Searing flames ele for my warrior with hundred blades (just because a love that skill with a zealous sword mod).

1)  MM hero - standard MM build with blood of master and healing circle

2)  Searing flames horsey =  Fire attunement, Searing flames, Glyph of Lesser Energy, Glowing Gaze.  The rest are upto you.  I carry a TURNED OFF meteor shower, mesmer interrupts, ress signet.

3)  Defensive paragon (16 command/12 leader/rest in tactics):

Incoming (well now that it's 3 secs it suckers, but nothing else is really better, maybe Anthem of Fury)
Stand your ground
They're on fire (to go with searing flame)
Anthem of Flame
Never surrender
Go for the eyes (adrenaline from spear)
Watch yourself (adrenaline from spear)
Signet of Return

For hench I use:

Devona (fighter)

The dervish

The healing monk (not the protective one)

Sologon the healing paragon (synergizes with my defensive paragon)

---------

For Lightbringer farming I don't use Zhed, because of the 40% energy penalty.  In those cases, I use a sword Koss W/E with adrealine skills and ward against melee.

Well, I the party I posted didn't work that well in the snake dance area when I was mapping so here's the one I went with which worked well (I mapped all of snake dance and areas north to Beacon's, so I consider it a success  Smiley)

Standard hero MM, Searing Flames Ele, Ranger interrupter (basically every interrupt you can get with broadhead arrow as the elite) with posion.
I filled out with the two warrior, mes, and protect monk henchie.

This would probably we a good party if there are alot of spell casters and or specific bosses you need to interrupt.

i usually run

1.  MM

2.  Searing Flames Ele (although im thinking of changing that cuz it seems the AI cant always do a good job with SF, i have to hold its hand sometimes)

3.  and a monk

then i grab a monk, ele, ele/ranger, necro hench

Im working on changing that up though.

I run 2 signet spamming smiting Monks w/ Inspiration Magic to recharge signets and either a Battery or MM.  Playing a Ritualist most of the time, you really burn through some energy and need a battery =).

Using the Ranger Heroes as Touch Rangers is pretty effective too.. they seem to know how to use the build correctly in most instances.
